G’day, Adventure Fam!
So, you’re thinking of tackling New Zealand’s South Island with the kiddos? Awesome! You’re in for a treat. We just got back from a 7-day road trip that was equal parts stunning scenery, epic adventures, and, let’s be honest, a healthy dose of ‘Are we there yet?’
The Route (and Why We Chose It):
We wanted a taste of everything – mountains, beaches, glaciers, and enough activities to tire the little terrors (and us!). This itinerary focused on a loop, starting and ending in Christchurch, minimizing driving time, and maximizing fun.
Day 1-2: Christchurch & Akaroa
- Explore Christchurch: Rebuild efforts are still in progress, but the city has an amazing vibe!
- Drive to Akaroa: Cute French colonial town.
- Activities: Dolphin watching (highly recommended!), kayaking in the harbor, exploring the shops.
Day 3: Lake Tekapo
- Drive to Lake Tekapo: The bluest lake you’ve ever seen!
- Activity: Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd. Stargazing at night (if the kids last!).
Day 4: Mount Cook National Park
- Drive to Mount Cook: Majestic mountain scenery!
- Activity: Short hikes suitable for kids (even ours!). Enjoy the views.
Day 5: Queenstown
- Drive to Queenstown: Adventure capital!
- Activity: Gondola ride with epic views, maybe a cheeky ice cream (or two!).
Day 6: Milford Sound
- Drive to Milford Sound: The drive itself is an adventure, so beautiful!
- Activity: Boat cruise through the fiord (waterfalls galore!).
Day 7: Back to Christchurch
- Scenic drive back to Christchurch.
- Relax, reminisce, and start planning your next adventure!
Tips & Tricks for Kiwi Road Tripping with Kids:
1. Pack Smart: Layers are your friend. The weather can change in a heartbeat. Don’t forget rain gear (essential!) and sunscreen.
2. Car Essentials: Snacks, snacks, and more snacks! Audiobooks and kid-friendly playlists are lifesavers. A portable charger is a must-have.
3. Embrace the Breaks: Plan for frequent stops. Parks, playgrounds, and quirky roadside attractions are your friends. Don’t try to cram too much in.
4. Accommodation: Consider self-catering options (like Airbnbs) to save money and simplify mealtimes. Camping is also great, but requires more gear.
5. Safety First: Be aware of the weather conditions. Road conditions can vary, especially in the mountains. Tell someone your itinerary.
6. Get Travel Insurance: For peace of mind.
Final Thoughts:
New Zealand is an incredible destination for families. Be prepared for a mix of awe-inspiring scenery, outdoor adventures, and a few meltdowns. Embrace the chaos, capture the memories, and enjoy the ride!
